DOUBLEDAY, William E (1865-1959)
Nottingham 1882; CL Marylebone Free Library 1889; 1CL Hampstead 1894-1931
He was a conservatively minded librarian who built up an excellent service at HAMPSTEAD. He is remembered mostly for his untiring and eventually successful efforts to secure a library license agreement in accordance with the restrictive terms of the Net Book Agreement; he worked for it for nearly 30 years until it was obtained in 1929/1932. He edited the LA series of textbooks, wrote for it A manual of library routine (1933) and edited A primer of librarianship (1931). He retained his lifelong interest in Nottingham and compiled an immense index of relevant references which is now in NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. He was made a LA Honorary Fellow in 1918.
